  May 20, 2007 :: Is That a Ceiling?

There is actually a full ceiling in the laundry room now. There's also a little bit of trim. Oh, and the beginnings of the counter/shelves...

Yesterday was another day of noticable advancement. The ceiling is now completely installed. It's nice to not see insulation hanging out everywhere. Of course, making the ceiling and walls meet up in some kind of cohesive fashion is my newest challenge. As I've mentioned, this room has no straight surfaces or 90° angles anywhere. I take that back...the new walls that I put up are straight. That's what's causing the problem.

Since I didn't want to lose any more floor space than necessary, I made the entrance part as small as possible. There is literally a door, a 2x4, and then the roof. Had I moved the door any farther into the room, there would have been no room to walk in there at all. What this all adds up to is a door that has 2.5" trim along the top. I don't have before pics of the gap, but due to ceiling slope (the wrong kind) and floor slope (ditto) there is just over 1/2 inch of variance from one side of the door to the other. My job was to cover the gap and minimize the impact of the difference.

There will be a LOT of "gap covering" in this room, by the way. The kitchen wall leans. I didn't notice this until I had the beadboard installed and the opening to the kitchen enlarged. I mean it REALLY leans. Within 8 feet (the height of the room) it leans into the kitchen 3 inches at the top. I keep telling myself "It's just a laundry room" and that I can fix the other side of the wall when I gut the kitchen. Still.... It has created some pretty impressive gaps. The 3 inch gap between beadboard panels at the top of the north corner, for instance. This room is getting 1x4 trim, where possible. "Where possible" because there just ain't 3.5 inches available between the ceiling and the top of the window trim. I'm trying to work out how to have 1x4 trim elsewhere, but 2" trim on the window wall. Should be interesting.

Anyhoo, I'll post the pictures now. We're taking a day off today - I'm getting old and my joints are yelling at me (I have arthritis) - so hopefully we'll do something fun and relaxing.

First, here are a couple of my recent "finds". The little set of drawers was purchased at the Greencastle street fair yesterday for $10. The smoke detector was found at CVS a few days ago for $3.50.

Here is my attempt at making the gap disappear. As you can see, this side is pretty close to the ceiling. The other side is just over 1/2" away from it (with the top door trim level with the door).

This picture didn't turn out at all, but it's just showing that there is a complete ceiling now.

Here's the counter/shelf thing I'm building to cover the plumbing and to give us a little more storage space. There will be one over the washer and dryer as well.

Lastly, here is my attempt at making the top trim presentable at all angles, and also make it possible to transition to thinner trim over the windows. I really need a scroll saw. This was done, handheld, with a cheap jigsaw.
