  December 4, 2006 :: Heating and Cooling

I have to leave for work in 15 minutes, so this one will be REALLY quick. Dave's Heating and Cooling came over this morning and installed a new furnace/cooling coil. They will return in the spring to install the outside AC compressor. Getting the old furnace out of the house was a chore. Getting the new one in was about the same as carrying in the groceries. lol

Below are pics of the new furnace and the old one in pieces. I didn't take any pictures of them working...it's pretty small and dark down there. The guys from Dave's were very quick and professional. They cleaned up what was likely the world's dirtiest basement, and secured all pipes and electric cables. I went to sleep at 1pm and woke up at 7:30pm to a new, working furnace.

My involvement in the whole process was to help haul the junk out, move things out of the way, AND install a new dedicated electric circuit for the furnace. I need to add another one this spring for the AC compressor.

There goes my 1950s furnace. I won't miss the gas bills. It put out a LOT of heat, though.

Another pic. Gigantic blower. The furnace was a 140,000 btu model.

One of Dave's trucks.

New furnace sitting in the basement. It's like replacing a home stereo system with an iPod.

Here it is all hooked up.

The Octopus.

Distance shot to show much room there is in there now.

Since this is a 92% efficiency furnace, it exhausts mostly water. My basement has no floor drain. As such, a pump and drain line were required. I told them they could use the drain pipe for the upstairs sink, since it was going to be removed anyway.

Here's the PVC exhaust pipe going through the brick foundation.

The pump (at bottom) for the water drain.

A view under the old part of the house.

The Snake. I had them install a new heat vent here in the "office"/Future "Sian's Retreat".

Here's the new vent under the old desk in here.

My only disappointment about the whole thing...They installed a new thermostat. A Non-Programmable one. My old one was programmable. I may see if they will change that. If not, they aren't expensive, so I'll just do it myself.
