August 27, 2006 :: Why Am I Thinking of The Amityville Horror?

There hasn't been a whole lot going on here lately. For the past several days, I've been pretty out of it due to a middle ear infection, swollen lymph nodes, a fever, and all that fun stuff. I did manage to get a little bit done though.

A couple of weeks ago I threw an amazing amount of crap out of the window upstairs. I did a little more of that recently, as well. I also happened across a couple of items which screamed "eBay!!!!" at me. So I put them on there. I made around $160. What were these items? First item was a Kool-Aid pitcher and cup set from sometime before 1963 (no zip code on the shipping boxes). Yes, the set was new and unused. Did I ever mention that my Grandma liked to hoard stuff?

The second item was a new, still-in-the-box 22 piece Anchor-Hocking "Royal Ruby" Luncheon Set. It had my Mom's name on it, so I'm guessing she bought this to use in her house after she got married, packed it away, and forgot about it. The box was opened, but nothing had been removed. The dividers were completely intact.

The box...

A very dark pic of the dishes.

How much did each go for, you ask?
The Kool-Aid stuff sold for $65.05, and the dishes sold for $105.00. Not a fortune by any means, but enough to pay for the insulation for the ceiling and walls in the bedroom. I was pretty pleased with my discoveries.

So now for the "Amityville" part of this entry...

While ripping out the walls in the bedroom, I noticed that there was likely enough room to access the "attic" of the addition from the hallway on the second floor of the old house. There is. Barely. Last 'weekend' and this 'weekend' (weekend in quotes, since my weekends are Thursday and Friday) I worked on gaining access to that space. I didn't want to cut the original wall studs, but I rationalized that the studs directly below were already cut, so what did it really matter? (The ex-Arch From HellTM is directly below this spot.)

Last Week

Just a hole in the wall.

Well look at that there wirin', would ya?

This Week

Daunting approaching shot....

Neither a carpenter, nor an engineer am I.

But I reckon it'll work....

As you can see, there's a LOT of work to do still. But at least I can get IN there now. lol. You can also see the old knob and tube wiring in some of the pictures. Guess what my next project is? Yup, after getting the opening all squared away (no pun intended), I'll be replacing the wiring and installing an attic floor. Will also install another layer of insulation when I do that.

Anyway, that's it for this update. I have to go tackle the living room at the moment. I'm cleaning out the closet in there, and as it is, I can *almost* make it to the front door. Yes, I've been trapped in here for a day now. :p
